Static website
Why?
The idea of having a website under my own domain has always appealed to me.
- I think it's cool

Shorter url
When using a website host without a custom domain, your site is usually under their domain. It may be identified by the subdomain or path.
For example, my default Github Pages url would beasoftglow.github.io. Alternatively, it could be identified in the path, like Google Sites:sites.google.com/view/asoftglow -
Customizability and mobility
Mobility
Suppose you were hosting your website through WordPress and its url was
asoftglow.wordpress.com. You give out the link to everyone you know, and your relatives bookmark it for safekeeping. Now you switch to Google Sites. Your new url issites.google.com/view/asoftglow. See the problem? Your relatives' bookmarks no longer work. You need to inform them all of the change, which means you need to deal with... a few choice relatives. That's no good. Instead, if you had used a custom domain, you'd simply tell your new host to use it.Customizability
There are a plethora of top level domains (TLDs) to choose from.

Coincidentally, I found this site while researching TLDs. The site doesn't seem to be functional, but I absolutely adore the design. It's clean and simple, with a retro vibe I didn't previously know about. TLD Observer
